Haritha Karma Sena

CANALPY has taken immense efforts to provide a new green job for Alappuzha by constituting and capacitating the Haritha Karma Sena(HKS), thus providing livelihood opportunities.

CANALPY has taken immense efforts to provide a new green job for Alappuzha by constituting and capacitating the Haritha Karma Sena(HKS), thus providing livelihood opportunities. With a vision to formalize solid waste management, expand the HKS enterprise in all 52 wards of Alappuzha and capacitate HKS as an entire ‘green jobs’ ecosystem, CANALPY’s efforts pioneered a new model with a proper system for plastic waste collection by HKS in Alappuzha. In the case of Alappuzha, HKS has the potential to bridge the gap which exists in the existing decentralized initiatives and build new ones. It was decided that the best way to ensure the sustainability of Solid Waste Management would be to integrate the solid waste management process into the HKS. CANALPY team assisted in training and capacity building of HKS in Alappuzha to evolve a new model with the active inclusion of women self-help group members into the process and worked closely with the HKS members for the social engineering process. CANALPY is currently working to revamp the waste management in the town with principles of Circular Economy and integrated sanitation solutions with a campaign that started on October 2, 2021

An experiment with MGNREGS
for flood mitigation in Nedumudi

1500 MGNREGS workers supported as unskilled labor for clay bund construction.

The reduction of water holding capacity in Kuttanad is a major threat to flood mitigation. To develop a sustainable solution to this issue, CANALPY together with KSSP (Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad) had conducted a pilot experiment with MGNREGS workers where a canal named “Powam thodu” was selected and decongested to bring back the water draining capacity of the canals and the utility of the canals through social engineering and participatory campaign. As part of the decongestion process, the bund construction component was added to the MGNREGS program with the help of a panchayat where 1500 MGNREGS workers supported as unskilled labor for clay bund construction.
